he's thinking that he lost her
that he could have made her stay
imagining tomorrows
but finding only yesterdays

So she'll catch her breath
as he holds her tight
stay cradled in his open arms
til she takes flight

he was a safe place to land
he was a gentle place to stay
but he was never her destination
just a stop along the way

he was never in her future
and all too quickly in her past
he might try with all his might
but he could never make it last

the fragile fleeting present tense
raised his hopes before it dashed them
took his checks but never cashed them
left him waiting by the phone

His sights were set on a place in her heart
instead of just her memories
she'll remember him fondly
as she gives her love to another
but he was never a destination
just a stop along the way

like the memories of a kiss
